Southern Wright Whale visits the Nature Coast
A Southern Wright Whale swam along the Coast for several days, causing traffic jams along the Coast Highway and much excitement. The above photo is from the Dominion Post Newspaper. Experts think it was on its annual migration from Antarctica - Historically there was extensive whaling on our coast, Kapiti Island still having rusted relics of those days, a few weeks ago a pod of Orca was seen, and last week pods of 100's of Dolphins were in Cook Strait. We do see some of these when fishing at time - usually penguins and dolphins with the odd shark. We woke on the Saturday morning and went down to Peka Peka beach to take the following photo.
